Community Engagement VISTA (Northern AZ)

St. Mary's Food Bank is seeking a full time Americorps VISTA for a one year placement based out of our office in Flagstaff. The Northern Arizona Community Engagement VISTA will help our organization address poverty in rural communities of Northern Arizona by increasing access to meals for children and families during the summer months. The VISTA will work to develop partnerships in target communities aimed at increasing collaboration and streamlining access to resources.

Objective of the Assignment: Conduct outreach on tribal and rural communities with a focus on expanding the Summer Food Service Program and increasing capacity at four school pantry sites.

  • Assist in building and strengthening partnerships with community partner agencies and non-traditional partners outside of hunger relief services to expand summer food and rural summer meal distribution sites.
  • Engage community members and clients in summer feeding and rural summer meal distribution in order to increase participation at rural sites. Engagement strategies will include: creating marketing campaigns, posting of flyers at community centers, working with partners on creating site activities, and devising other strategies based on input from the community.
  • Assist in building and strengthening partnerships with community partner agencies and non-traditional partners outside of hunger relief services to expand summer food and rural summer meal distribution sites.
  • Create and distribute surveys to determine impact of summer food service, rural summer meal distribution and school pantry programs. Draft report and recommendations for on-going program challenges and barriers.
  • Assist with promotion of the Summer Food Service Program in target communities and identify community partners to support summer food programs and increase participation. Conduct on-site training and site monitoring for summer feeding and rural summer meal distribution following all USDA program requirements.

Requirements to serve as a VISTA member

       Must be 18 years of age

       US citizen, national, or legal resident

       Successfully complete a criminal background check
