The Safety Compliance Specialist at St. Mary’s Food Bank is responsible for assisting the Safety Manager and Department Leaders at all levels in fostering a safety-conscious culture in the workplace and ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment. The Safety Compliance Specialist will be responsible for reviewing, understanding, and developing best practices, recognizing potential hazards, assist in developing resources and communicating our organization’s safety and compliance expectations for validating effective strategies to recognize and avoid potential hazards. The Safety Compliance Specialist must have the motivation, desire, and commitment to work hands-on to help the organization and personnel understand the expectations of promoting safety, security, and compliance.
Essential Functions
- Assist with mandatory monthly warehouse, operations, and fire life safety inspections, including eye wash stations, first aid kits, elevators, etc.
- Track and ensure all personnel are up to date on equipment and workplace training and certifications. This includes re-certifications of operator’s who have expired operators’ authorization equipment cards.
- Assist the Safety Manager to evaluate and develop strategic safety policies, procedures, and training programs to prevent accidents and incidents.
- Conduct food safety and quality assurance inspections.
- Evaluate, process, and coordinate burglar, fire, and emergency safety alarms systems in all existing and future warehouse buildings.
- Possess extensive knowledge and understanding of logistics safety, OSHA, DOT, and EHS regulations governing incident and injury prevention in the workplace.
- Be familiar with Fire Life Safety compliance, procedures, and regulations to assist with annual and bi-annual inspections governed by the Phoenix and Surprise Fire Marshals.
- Assist the Safety Manager to maintain and update the organization’s Emergency Evacuation Action Plan (EEAP) as needed and required.
- Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, power industrial equipment, and practices to ensure compliance with Local, County, State and SMFB regulations.
- Collaborate with all employees to promote safety awareness and ensure regulatory compliance through in person or electronic inspections.
- Assist with accident and incident investigations including all personnel: transportation, warehouse, operations, and agency services utilizing organizational equipment, organizational vehicles, tractors, trailers, and box-trucks.
- Work in conjunction with the Safety Manager to recommend processes and procedures of safety features which will reduce employees’ exposure to chemical, physical, and biological work hazards.
- Stay informed and up to date on new safety technology, industry trends, and best practices for safety, compliance, and accountability.
- Assist Safety Manager with gathering and documenting specific safety data information for each department for monthly inspections and safety alignment meetings.
- Attend and participate in monthly employee engagement safety meetings which will include all departments of the organization.
- Work with all departments to mitigate workplace hazards and promote a safe and productive work environment.
Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all internal/external customers of St. Mary’s Food Bank with an excellent service experience.

Physical Demands/Environment Factors
- Requires extensive standing, walking and some sitting.
- May be required to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Requires significant use of personal computer, phone and general office equipment.
- Needs adequate visual acuity, ability to grasp and handle objects.
- Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone.
- Will require some off-site travel to all St. Mary’s locations; Surprise and Chinle, AZ
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): Required
- Bachelor’s Degree: Preferred (Safety, Risk Management, Logistics, or related)
- 2 plus years’ experience in warehouse, operations, fire life safety practices preferred.
- Knowledge of OSHA, DOT, EHS, and related safety compliance regulations.
- OSHA 10 - General Industry Certification is recommended.
- OSHA 30 - Safety Management and Compliance preferred or willingness to acquire certification within 6 months after employment.
- Strong organization skills, accurate, and detail-oriented
- PC skills including working knowledge of the Microsoft environment and the ability to access, manipulate, organize and relay information in a meaningful way.
- HACCAP certification preferred or willingness to acquire certification within 6 months after employment.
