St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance, the world's first food
bank, is a non-sectarian, nonprofit organization with a mission to alleviate hunger through the gathering and distribution of food while encouraging self-sufficiency, collaboration, advocacy and education. Serving 13 of Arizona's 15 counties,
the organization is committed to volunteerism, building community relationships and improving the quality of life for Arizonans in need.
St. Mary's Food Bank takes very seriously and with unmatched pride its commitment as a responsible non-profit organization that is accountable to the community it serves. Over five decades, St. Mary's has tackled the challenge of easing hunger
in Arizona through the vision of founder, John van Hengel.
Keeping pace with the incredible upturn in need that has followed the poor economic climate and the huge rise in unemployment and underemployment, the Food Bank distributed more than 74 million pounds of food in Fiscal Year 2010-11. In order to meets
the needs of the ever-rising number of Arizona's hungry, St. Mary's supplied enough food into the community to provide nearly 275,000 meals a day.
Senior citizens and families with children comprise the majority of the clients served by the Food Bank. By partnering with over 500 Arizona agencies, the Food Bank is able to distribute food to 700 sites. The community can support the Food Bank through donations of time, money or food. Contributions are used efficiently
and wisely: every dollar donated provides enough for seven meals.
The Food Bank strives to ensure that a large percentage of every donation reaches those in need. More than 96 percent of every donation received is used to support its mission-driven services, ranking St. Mary’s as one of the most
efficient of all charities.
Those who have examined our fiscal practices and businesses have found St. Mary's to be a safe and trustworthy organization. Charity Navigator, the nation's top charity evaluator, has awarded the Food Bank its 4-star rating –
the highest possible rating -- nine times, including Fiscal Year 2010-11.
In 2011, St. Mary's Food Bank was named a Most Admired Company in Arizona and a Best Place To Work in Phoenix. Our employees are treated to an exceptional benefits package and
