Student Development/Re-Entry Specialist

St. Mary's Food Bank is currently seeking a Student Development/Re-Entry Specialist for our Community Kitchen program. The Student Development Specialist provides direct and initial support to student participating in the Community Kitchen culinary training program to ensure program completion. This position reports to the Sr. Program Administrative Manager and works in collaboration with the Program Outreach Specialist, Career Services Specialist, Sr. Manager of Food Services and the culinary instructors. Core responsibilities include front line oversight of student resources, student relations, and life skill classroom coordination and instruction.

Job Responsibilities/Duties

Re-Entry:

  •  Follow up with all Community Kitchen students from offsite locations once they are released from incarceration. 
  •  Assist Career Services Specialist with immediate job placement leads for those that need immediate work 
  •  Complete screening to determine students’ need (housing, employment, education, domestic violence, mental health, substance abuse treatment, health, parenting, legal and reunification)  
  •  Provide students with support services and/or make referrals or linkages to other community agencies to resolve barriers to housing, employment, and other basic needs  
  •  Assist students in developing goal and action plan, and documents progress and referrals 
  •  Transporting or arranging transport students to off-site appointments, court dates, school, etc. on an as-needed basis  
  •  Make presentations to community-based organizations, and DOC facilities as needed  
  •  Coordinate and network with public and private community resources that may assist students  
    •  Housing 
    •  Substance abuse 
    •  Legal services 
    •  Re-entry service 
    •  Support groups 
    •  Counseling 
    •  SNAP/DES 

Classroom Coordination & Instruction:

  •  Develops and creates appropriate life skill curriculum to fit the needs of a diverse learning population (ie: time management, teamwork, communication, goal setting)
  •  Facilitates various life skill training sessions
  •  Create trainings that cater to adult learners
  •  Coordinates Life Skills classes, Morning Meetings, and special student activities through coordination of scheduling, invitation correspondence, selection of materials and follow-up
  •  Prepares and prints materials for Life Skills classes.
  •  Assists in the preparation of informational, educational, and interactive life skill teaching materials
  •  Collaborates with instructors and program management in the development and evaluation of educational programming 

Education:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in social work, public health, social/behavioral sciences or equivalent and/or three or more years’ experience in social services or student affairs work or related specialty

  •  A strong sense of community involvement and the desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others
  •  Valid AZ Drivers License

Preferred: 

  •  General knowledge of commercial kitchen operations or food service
